Duggins finishes heralded WSU career

What did Vaughn Duggins not do for the Wright State basketball program?

In his five years at the school (he received a medical redshirt for a broken finger in 2008-09), Duggins reached third place on the Raiders’ career-scoring list at 1,777 points. He played more minutes in more games than any other WSU player. He often guarded the other team’s best players, making the league’s All-Defensive Team last season (his absence on the team this year seriously irked coach Billy Donlon).

His career ended on Friday night with Wright State’s loss to Cleveland State in a Horizon League quarterfinal. After the game, as the seniors who were in the postgame interview room filed past Donlon, each got a hug. Duggins went past last, and he and Donlon shared a longer embrace.

Donlon has been passionate all season about discussing Duggins, wondering why he didn’t get the respect Donlon felt he deserved around the league. It was clear these two had a special coach-player connection, which is why Duggins got an extra pat on the back of the head.

He was a player WSU could pass the ball to and count on for points — all while, by the way, playing with a stress fracture in his back.

He had a strong senior season to finish an impressive career. Quite frankly, I’ll miss watching him play.
