Commentary: UD Arena's magic shouldn't be taken for granted

We’ve got a Christmas weekend treat for University of Dayton basketball fans in Sunday’s Sports section. I want to bring this to your attention, just in case you’re preoccupied with returning gifts or playing the Wii.

The Flyers’ next victory — presumably Tuesday night against Boston University — will be their 500th at UD Arena, which opened 40 years ago.

UD beat writer Doug Harris will take a look back at some of the Flyers’ biggest wins at one of America’s best basketball venues. From Ed Young’s shot to a stirring upset of Pittsburgh, Harris will take the Flyer Faithful on a satisfying trip back in time.

I’ve seen basketball games at every level — high school, college, pro — and UD Arena is among my three favorite places to watch a game. The other two, in no particular order, are Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis and the Wigwam in Anderson, Ind.

I mention the Wigwam because when I was lucky enough to see a high school game at that historic venue — some 20 years ago — 9,000 fans packed the place. That is not the case these days in Anderson, like Dayton a city that was hit hard when General Motors jobs disappeared.

In fact, there was talk last year of closing the Wigwam because of the high price to keep it up and the fact that crowds have dwindled to a fraction of what they were in the glory days of Indiana high school basketball.

That is a sad development. It also illustrates how good we have it in Dayton.
