There was news in recent days regarding two local high school graduates trying to make their way to the big leagues — or back to the big leagues in the case of one.
The St. Louis Cardinals announced the signing of Beavercreek High School and University of Dayton graduate Mike Hauschild to a minor-league contract on Nov. 19. He will go to spring training with the Cardinals in Jupiter, Fla.

Hauschild, 28, made his Major League debut in 2017 with the Texas Rangers and picked up his first career victory and made his first start last season with the Toronto Blue Jays. He has spent seven seasons in the minors and is 50-41 with a 3.85 ERA.
Tecumseh High School graduate and former Akron Zips pitcher J.T. Brubaker was added to the 40-man roster of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Nov. 20.

Brubaker, 25, was named the PIrates’ minor league pitcher of the year in 2018. He was 8-4 with a 3.10 ERA in 22 starts for the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians. In five seasons in the minors, he’s 29-27 with a 3.68 ERA.
