Atlantic 10 honors two members of Dayton women’s basketball team in annual awards

Flyers head to Pittsburgh this weekend for conference tournament

Two members of the Dayton Flyers women’s basketball team earned All-Atlantic 10 Conference honors on Thursday.

Junior guard Jayla Scaife, who leads the Flyers in scoring (14.9) and rebounding average (7.4), was named to the A-10 first team. Senior guard Lauren Cannatelli, who averages 13.4 points per game and leads the team with 58 3-pointers, made the second team. She also was named to the all-academic team.

George Mason’s Nicole Cardano-Hillary was named the player of the year. Kerri McMahan, of Saint Louis, won the defensive player of the year award. Beth O’Boyle, coach of regular-season championship Virginia Commonwealth, was named the top coach.

The most improved player was Davidson’s Sarah Donovan, and Davidson’s Justine Lyon was named the top six woman.

No. 4 seed Dayton (16-12) plays No. 5 seed Davidson at 2 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals of the A-10 tournament at the A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh. The winner will play No. 1 seed VCU or No. 8 seed Saint Joseph’s at 11 a.m. Saturday in the semifinals.
