Background/Overview: Marilyn Leopard shyly smiles as she recalls how Virgil Mumford employed her in 1956 because her boyfriend Frank had been hired a few months before and she visited him often. A year later, the couple married and eventually left Mumford's. Frank went to work at Navistar and Marilyn went to work at Big Bear Supermarket.
Asa Mumford raised potatoes with his family on their farm in Champaign County. They had such a surplus of potatoes in 1932 that he and his son, Virgil, opened a small business making old - fashioned kettle cooked potato chips in back of a friend’s grocery store on Court Street. They moved their company to several locations along Main Street. In 1976, Virgil asked his trusted friends Frank and Marilyn if they would purchase the business. They agreed and while each continued their day jobs, their son Randy managed the business and they worked at their Mumford’s Deli/ Carryout in the evenings. Their three children have all worked alongside their parents to help the Deli grow.
In 1983, the business moved to its present location, which allows for the popular Deli menu as well as seating for 50 visitors in two rooms. Marilyn, Randy and his wife, Tia, co - own and operate the company today. “Mumford’s Old - Fashioned Kettle Cooked Potato Chips,” and other varieties, are now manufactured in northeast Ohio and sold in abundance at the Deli. Also, the owners maintain, “Our sandwiches are made-to-order by our friendly staff in a welcoming atmosphere” at Mumford’s Potato Chips & Deli.

Baked Goods: Iced Sugar Cookies - $ .50/$ .75; Homemade Brownies - $1.25.
Daily Special: Deli sandwich, Mumford's chips, pickle, and can of soda or freshly-brewed iced tea - $ (posted daily).
Winter Menu: (served w/ Mumford's chips & pickle) BLT Sandwich - $5.25; Turkey-Bacon Club Sandwich - $6.50.
Sandwiches: Mumford's Italian Sausage - $4.75; Imported Ham - $5/$6.10; Roast Beef - $5.10/$6.25; Reuben - $5.50/$6.50; Veggie Sub - $4.75/$5.75.
Soups (vary daily, and could be): Bacon Potato Chowder, Broccoli Cheese & Rice, or Chili - $3.75. Salads: Garden Salad - $2.25; Chef Salad - $5.75; Steak Salad - $6.25.
Desserts: Homemade Cheesecake - $2.25/$2.50.
Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.
More Information: Off-street parking only. There's one quick step into the front doorway. A back entrance is there for handicapped necessity only. Cash or Check only is accepted for payment.
Boxed Lunches come w/choice of sandwich on select bread, Mumford’s chips, lettuce & tomato, pickle, mustard potato salad, and cookie - $7.
Lunch delivery is offered for $2 for orders of five or more within the Urbana area. Please call an hour ahead of time.
