Princess Diana’s death: How the royal family has honored her memory

It has been 21 years since the People’s Princess, Princess Diana, was killed in a car crash in the tunnels of Paris, but she has never left those who loved and admired her, two decades after she died.

Diana’s presence was felt at the marriage of her youngest son Prince Harry to Meghan Markle as the newlywed royal wore Princess Diana’s aquamarine ring to their reception.

Prince Harry also used two of Diana’s diamonds to make Markle’s engagement ring.  He also picked Diana’s favorite flowers, forget-me-nots, from Kensington Palace gardens for the Duchess of Sussex’s wedding bouquet, "Today" reported.

During the ceremony itself, Lady Jane Fellowes, Diana’s sister, did a reading, the Song of Solomon, ABC News reported.

Prince Harry and Meghan aren’t the only ones to keep her in their hearts. Prince William and Kate Middleton have also embraced Diana’s parenting style, trying to give their children as normal of a life as possible, Pop Sugar reported.

Prince William chose to live in Kensington Palace, the same location where Diana lived after she divorced Prince Charles. So did Prince Harry and Meghan, Business Insider reported in May.

Prince William and Kate also honored his mother with their name choice for Princess Charlotte, The Mirror reported. Her full name is Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

Prince William also used the same photographer that Diana used for some of her most recognized portraits. Mario Testino was used for Prince William’s engagement portraits with Kate and again for Princess Charlotte’s christening

But one of the biggest ways Prince Harry and Prince William remember their mother is through continuing their charity work. Harry still is a patron for landmine charities and helping HIV/AIDS patients. He started Sentebale to help children with HIV in Lesotho and Botswana, the BBC reported. William is a patron of The Royal Marsden hospital and Centrepoint, a homeless charity.

Princess Diana was expected to be home at Kensington Palace the day after the deadly crash. She had called her former butler to reschedule her engagements, he told “Good Morning Britain.”

“I was at Kensington Palace waiting for the Princess to come home and she’d rung me and said, ‘I’m going to be a day late, would you postpone all my engagements until the day after?’ which I did and she never came home,” Paul Burrell told “Good Morning Britain.”
