Brazilian pilot, who had flown in Dayton Air Show, killed in crash

The Brazilian air force’s aerial demonstrations squadron, which appeared in the Dayton Air Show in 2007 and 2009, is investigating the death of one of its pilots killed in a fiery crash Friday, April 2, during a flying show in Brazil.

Brazilian air force officials identified the victim as Capt. Anderson Amaro Fernandes, 33. The T-27 Tucano airplane he was flying smashed into a field at Lages, Brazil, during the aerobatics show. Videos of the fiery crash were posted on the Internet.

Determining the cause of the crash is especially important since all members of the aerial squadron fly the same type of planes. The team is known as the “smoke squadron” because its planes leave smoke trails during their flying exhibitions.

Dayton Air Show management is saddened by the death, said Michael Emoff, the show’s chairman. Emoff said he has gotten to know the Brazilian team members during their visits to Dayton. The team is tentatively scheduled to perform again in the 2011 Dayton Air Show, Emoff said.

“I had the whole team at my house, twice,” he said. “They love it here. They really engage with the community.”
