Vandalia-Butler names new athletic director

Vandalia-Butler City Schools has named its new athletic director.

The school board approved Jordan Shumaker as the district’s new athletic director at its work session Monday. Shumaker comes to Vandalia-Butler after serving as the athletic director at Graham Local Schools since August 2014.

“In a large pool of highly skilled candidates, Jordan demonstrated he understands all aspects of the role of Athletic Director,” Superintendent Brad Neavin said in a release. “His commitment to all students as students first, his understanding of administrative management and his efficacy in the area of community engagement made him the clear choice to serve our student athletes and our community.”

Prior to serving as Graham’s athletic director, Shumaker coached at both the high school and the college level.

He was the head baseball coach at Northwestern High School in Springfield, taking his team to the district finals in 2012, the second-best finish in school history. He was the assistant baseball coach at Wittenberg University in the 2013-2014 season. He also coached golf at Northwestern, and basketball and baseball at Cedarville University, his alma mater.

“One of the main reasons I wanted to go into education as a profession was to have a platform to work with student athletes outside of the classroom,” Shumaker said in a release. “I am thankful for the opportunities that my education profession has given me to work with kids in education and sports.”

Shumaker replaces Roger Bowen, who has been Vandalia-Butler’s athletic director from 2001-2010 and again from 2014-2016.

Shumaker, his wife Caitlin and their two children plan to move to the Vandalia-Butler area.
