Urbana’s street microsurfacing program scheduled to start next week

Construction on Urbana’s 2020 street microsurfacing program is scheduled to start next week.

Strawser Construction, Inc. of Columbus will start work on Monday, Aug. 10, weather permitting, the city’s engineer said.

“The work is under contract for $130,037.63 and is a portion of the city’s planned asphalt maintenance and paving projects for 2020,” Tyler Bumbalough said.

The streets scheduled to be microsurfaced (pavement protection) include East Water Street from South Main Street to Finch Street and East Lawn Avenue from Scioto Street to Bloomfield Avenue.

Parking restrictions will be posted within the work areas, vehicles parked in violation will be towed, and flaggers will also be used to maintain traffic as brief closures of cross streets are possible, Bumbalough said.

“Prior to the microsurfacing work, a subcontractor will remove the existing pavement markings. After the microsurfacing work is completed, temporary pavement markings will be installed on the new surface, followed by permanent markings about two weeks later,” Bumbalough said.

Past work includes: East Water Street was last resurfaced in 2006, East Lawn Avenue was last resurfaced in 2009, and Bituminous Pavement Systems completed crack sealing of multiple city streets for $44,550.50 earlier this summer.

Bumbalolugh added that asphalt resurfacing of several city streets under a separate contract with The Shelly Company is scheduled in September at $322,970.90.
