This beer tastes like a Dreamsicle, and YOU can try it tonight

It started as an April Fool’s joke, then took on a life of its own.

Cincinnati-based brewery MadTree Brewing Company today released its Dreamsicle beer in cans in the Dayton, Springfield and northern Cincinnati retail market. The beer was officially released at the Cincinnati brewery last night, and is now showing up at bars, beer shops, grocery stores and other retailers in the Miami Valley today, Sept. 1.

Demand is expected to be strong. Ollie's Place in Washington Twp. is placing a one-six-pack-per-customer limit on purchases.

A MadTree news release spells out how this particular beer went from an April Fool’s joke to a petition to, ultimately, the decision to can what had become a taproom-only, customer-favorite beer.

Dayton’s craft beer: A guide to breweries

“The brewery had long served Dreamsicle, a light kolsch style ale with orange and vanilla, in the taproom and it was consistently a top seller. However, when they jokingly (on April Fool’s Day) released a rendering of the beer in can form, with a whimsical octopus holding an ice cream cone, MadTree fans erupted with approval. It wasn’t until it was revealed that the can was just a prank that the public expressed a range of emotions from disappointment to outrage.”

“The brewery received phone calls, emails, and social media messages daily asking when it would be canned. … There was even an online petition drive that garnered hundreds of signatures. Eventually, MadTree decided it was time to begin canning the beer once they had the production capacity to do so.”

“Dreamsicle was one of those beers created on a whim by the brewers that really caught the attention of taproom patrons,” MadTree Brewing graphic designer, Nicki Logsdon, said in a release. “We thought it would be a funny April Fool’s Day prank to act like we were going to can it, so I came up with what I thought was a ridiculous octopus eating an ice cream cone design. The response was a bit overwhelming, to say the least, so we decided to roll with the now famous octopus.”
