Strickland sticks to 3 snow days

COLUMBUS — John Kasich can do what he wants when he takes over on Jan. 10, but lame duck Gov. Ted Strickland said Wednesday he is sticking to a three-day “calamity day” policy for Ohio schools.

Kasich, a Republican, told the Dayton Daily News on Tuesday, that when he becomes governor he’ll move to switch back to five “calamity days” — permitted days off caused by snow or similar problems.

Kasich said he was lobbied by both his daughter Reese, 10, and Elin Hansen, also 10, daughter of Kasich’s chief of staff Beth Hansen.

“The state pays for all of the calamity days,” said Strickland, defeated for re-election by Kasich. “I believe that when the state pays for a day of instruction for a student, the student should get a day of instruction.”

Democrat Strickland declined to mix it up with Kasich over the issue.

“I don’t want to get into whether it was a good or bad idea,” he said.

In backing the return to five days, Kasich said “we live in a climate where we have bad weather.”
