Boehner also said Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee “whether people like it or not.”

Boehner made the remarks Thursday, the same day that his successor Paul Ryan met with Trump in Washington. Boehner acknowledged Trump and Republicans have disagreements on issues, but said “things are going to get smoothed over.”

According to the Associated Press, Boehner thinks Ryan is probably “trying to help shape the direction of Trump’s policies.”

Boehner — who was speaker before Ryan — says he doesn’t “doubt there will be a meeting of the minds.”

Boehner did support Ohio Gov. John Kasich during the primary season.
