Springfield City Commission to weigh zone change for proposed new housing project

The Springfield City Commission is scheduled to hold a public hearing during its meeting today to consider a zoning change that would allow for a new senior housing development on West High Street.

The proposed project would comprise of a 41-unit two story building with 27 one-bedroom and 14 two-bedroom units of housing restricted to seniors 55 years and older, according to the application filed with the city.

The application calls for a rezoning 4.35 acres at 1315 West High Street from G, Green Space, Park and School District to RM-12, Low Density, Multi-Family Residence District. The property is owned by the Springfield City Board of Education.

The project would include an on-site property management offices, social service offices, exercise room, a computer lab, community room, and lounge and laundry areas, according to the application.

The Springfield City Commission will meet in virtual session at 2 p.m. today in place of its regular evening meeting, according to a news release from the city.

The meeting will be held via Zoom and can be viewed on YouTube. In-person attendance is prohibitied due to COVID-19 restrictions.
