When it comes to flying, you might not think that the airport you choose has a direct bearing on the airfare deals you can get, but a recent report says otherwise.

Travel deals site Scott's Cheap Flights lists U.S. airports with the most cheap flights and those with the least.

Which Airports Have the Most Domestic Flight Deals?

The website based its results on the number of deals it found for its subscribers at U.S. airports over the past six months.

Scott’s used data from domestic flights at airports located in U.S. metropolitan areas with at least 1 million people.

Here are some key findings from Scott’s Cheap Flights’ analysis:

  • The best airports were those where Scott's identified 3-5 flight deals each week.
  • The worst airports were those where Scott's typically found only one deal per week.
  • Not one single airport in two of the largest metro areas in the Northeast — New York City and Washington, D.C. — made the top 10 list for deals.

Let's look at the top five airports for deals on airfare, according to Scott's Cheap Flights.

Airport / CodeDeals Over the Past 6 Months
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) 114
Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) 109
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS)106
Minneapolis−Saint Paul International Airport (MSP)106
Denver International Airport (DEN)103

How To Save When You Fly

Money expert Clark Howard loves to travel — but not as much as he loves to save! Here are three travel tips that Clark uses to get the best deals regardless of the airports involved.

Search Online for Airfare Sales

Clark usually starts his online search for cheap flights at Kayak.com, where he uses the Explore feature to find affordable destinations.

He's also a big fan of Google Flights, which lets you compare flights on several different airlines to see which is the cheapest.

After you have an idea of what travel deals are available, the next thing you need to focus on is timing.

Know When To Book

If you want to save when you buy a plane ticket, make sure you shop on the right day.

The best day to book a cheap flight is Sunday for both domestic and international flights. Here's more information on the best times to schedule your next trip.

Avoid Airline Junk Fees

While there are some airline fees you can’t get around, there are others that you can.

You usually can keep your travel bill down if you avoid the following fees:

  • Baggage
  • Seat selection
  • Boarding pass printing

Final Thoughts

Now that you know the top airports for travel deals and even when to book, all you need now is a destination.

Want to save money on your next flight? Here's Clark's #1 travel rule.
