New Carlisle issues evening curfew; crowds begin gathering for afternoon protest

UPDATED 1:40 p.m.: 

A small crowd has gathered in Smith Park in New Carlisle this afternoon to show support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

The march against racial injustice and for racial equality being held this afternoon in New Carlisle is continuing its route through the city.

EARLIER:

New Carlisle officials have issued a curfew tonight beginning at 6 p.m. due to a protest scheduled in the city tonight, a press release said.

The curfew will last until 6 a.m. on Sunday, June 21. According to the order, the curfew prohibits loitering, congregating or engaging in conduct that would not be considered a “day-to-day” activity.

The curfew does not apply to city officials, members of the public safety force, emergency personnel, health care workers, essential workers, credentialed members of the media, those experiencing homelessness and local government officials engaging in lawful duties, the release said.

City officials did not offer any additional comment.
