Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey told KTLA the girl was jumping on a sofa around 1 p.m. Saturday in an apartment in Koreatown when she fell. Humphrey told the City News Service that the window had been open at the time of the incident, though it had a screen.

Authorities told KTLA the girl's aunt was home when she fell.

Humphrey said the girl hit the back of her head on a concrete path when she landed, according to the City News Service. He said that when paramedics arrived, the girl was having difficulty breathing, and she later underwent surgery.

She was last listed Sunday in grave condition, the City News Service reported.

Humphrey urged families to use caution when placing furniture near windows to ensure the safety of children.

According to a 2011 study from researchers at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, thousands of children are injured each year as a result of a fall from a window. It was known in only about 17% of cases reviewed by researchers whether a screen was in a window at the time of a child's fall, but researchers noted that "findings from other studies demonstrate that screens often are in place (up to 76% of the time) but do not provide adequate protection against window falls involving children."
