State of the Union address scheduled despite impeachment

As is the tradition and law, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has invited President Donald Trump to present the State of the Union address.

In a letter sent to the White House, Pelosi wrote, “In the spirit of respecting our Constitution, I invite you to deliver your State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, February 4, 2020 in the Chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives.”

The letter was dated just days after the House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump for abuse of power and contempt of Congress, CNN reported.

The White House announced the president accepted the invitation, ABC News reported.

The start of the trial, which will be held in the Senate, has not yet been scheduled.

The Senate has yet to set the rules of how the trial will be conducted, and Pelosi has not yet sent it the articles of impeachment.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the trial will be pending as lawmakers leave D.C. for the holidays until next year, CNN reported.
