A South Carolina firefighter was killed Friday when he was hit by a semi-truck while assisting the victim of a car crash, authorities said.

Lexington County Fire Service engineer Paul Quattlebaum, a 22-year veteran of the department, was headed to a medical call with a partner when they saw a collision scene, WACH reported.

As they stopped to offer assistance, Quattlebaum was hit by the semi, the television station reported.

"When you lose someone like an emergency responder, it's tough on everyone." Harrison Cahill, of Lexington County Fire, told WACH.

Quattlebaum was taken to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries, the television station reported.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, 82 firefighters died while on duty in 2018, CNN reported.

"(Quattlebaum's) loss is felt greatly throughout the Lexington county fire service community as well as the emergency services here in Lexington county, including 911 and EMS," Cahill told WACH.
