Police escort fallen officer's son on first day of school

The beginning of the school year can be tough on families, but for the Scherlens, it’s especially difficult this year because one special member of their family is missing.

Amarillo police Officer Justin Scherlen, 39, died earlier this month during a family trip. The cause of death is believed to be related to complications from an on-duty car crash last September. Scherlen was critically injured and was going through extensive rehabilitation following the accident.

KVII captured video of Amarillo police officers lining the hallways of Coronado Elementary School Monday to hug Jackson Scherlen, who is beginning pre-K this year.
