A California boy is dead after his family’s pet pit bull mauled him at their Oro Grande home, authorities said.

According to KABC and the Daily Press, the 5-year-old boy was in a relative's care when the dog attacked him about 3 p.m. Monday, authorities said. Investigators have not said what prompted the attack.

Although the relative called 911, "the child succumbed to his injuries before law enforcement and fire officials arrived," the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said in a statement to the Daily Press.

San Bernardino Animal Control now has custody of the dog, the news outlets reported.

If you have information about the incident, call the department at 760-552-6800.
