Panthers to appeal more than $4.8 million owed in property taxes

Bank of America Stadium is a huge asset to the city of Charlotte, but the Panthers believe they’ve been asked to pay too much in property taxes.

Currently, the organization owes more than $4.8 million. The Panthers said their bill went up 200% after the county’s property revaluation.

The payment was due on Jan. 6, but it has not been paid. The organization is being charged 2% interest for the month of January.

Taxes collected are used by the county, city and local towns to provide services like police, fire protection and garbage pickup.

There will be a hearing Friday morning to discuss the Panthers' appeal to the county tax collector, and the team will argue why its property tax should be lower.

Last year, Eyewitness News reported that Google Fiber owed around $1.8 million in delinquent property taxes. That was the county's largest outstanding tax at the time.

The county also flagged Frito-Lay for delinquent taxes at its Nevada Boulevard location. About a dozen other property owners in Mecklenburg County owed more than $10,000 in late tax fees.
