According to CNN, the officers attempted to arrest a man who had been selling T-shirts on the street after he urinated inside Goldmine Nails when employees declined to allow the man to use the restroom. The officers discovered the man had a warrant out for his arrest while attempting to remove him from the business, at which point he resisted their efforts and a second man entered the store from outside.

Chief of Patrol Rodney K. Harrison said in a news conference the second man initiated a “violent struggle” with the officers, one of whom discharged a taser to no avail. At that point, the man hit the other officer with a metal chair.

Harrison said the officer who was struck, a 21-year veteran of the NYPD, fired six shots at the man and killed him. The officer remains in critical but stable condition, CNN reported.

The second officer, who has been on the force seven months, has been treated for his injuries and released, WABC reported.
