A New Jersey high school student was fatally struck by a train Tuesday evening near Edison, officials said.

Aditya Tejaswi, 17, who attends St. Joseph High School, died after being struck about 6:45 p.m., Nathan Rudy, a transit spokesman, told NJ.com on Wednesday.

“We learned last night that one of our students, Aditya Tejaswi, Class of 2021, suffered an untimely death. It is always a sad day when a member of our Saint Joseph High School faith community is suddenly and tragically taken from us,” the school said in a notice sent to families.

The school said guidance counselors and teachers would be available for students, the Courier News and Home Tribune reported.

“We are grateful for the outpouring of support and resources that we have received from surrounding schools as well,” the notice said. “Let us remember Aditya and his family in our prayers on this Ash Wednesday.”

The train had left Penn Station in New York City at 6:12 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Trenton at 7:35 p.m., the Courier News and Home Tribune reported.

None of the passengers or crew members were injured, the newspaper reported.
