MLB Yankees, White Sox to play ball on real ‘Field of Dreams’ at Iowa farm

The league is going to turn the film into a reality next summer.

It announced Thursday that it's building a temporary ballpark amid the cornfields at the farm in Dyersville, Iowa, where the movie was filmed, and it's planning a game there between the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox next August, according to news reports.

"As a sport that is proud of its history linking generations, Major League Baseball is excited to bring a regular season game to the site of 'Field of Dreams,'" Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement.

"We look forward to celebrating the movie's enduring message of how baseball brings people together at this special cornfield in Iowa," he said.

The baseball organization will begin building a temporary 8,000-seat ballpark next month at the farm modeled off Chicago's Comiskey Park, the home of the White Sox from 1910 to 1990. The right field will include windows with views of the cornfields beyond the park, MLB said.

Fans will walk down a path through the cornfields to reach the field, which will overlook the famed movie location.

In the movie "Field of Dreams," a farmer, played by Kevin Costner, hears a voice from his cornfield telling him, "If you build it, they will come." According to Internet Movie Database, the farmer thinks the message means he should build a baseball field on his farm. If he does, he believes the ghosts of Shoeless Joe Jackson and the other seven Chicago White Sox players banned from the game for throwing the 1919 World Series will appear to play on the field.

The movie has resonated with baseball fans for 30 years and apparently has with Major League Baseball, too.
