Police were called to do a welfare check Wednesday by the family of a 61-year-old man who had not been heard from in weeks, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Investigators were unable to contact him. They reached out to the property owner, who gave them access inside the man’s house.
They found Angela Shock, 49, living in the house, which had an overwhelming odor. Shock told investigators her boyfriend died several weeks earlier and she continued living at the house with the corpse anyway.
Police confirmed the man had been dead about a month and Shock had been using his bank card, the Free Press reported.
Shock was taken to a hospital for evaluation. She was interviewed by officers the next day. She was arrested Friday and charged with concealing the death of another, WDIV reported.
Shock told a judge her boyfriend was her only means of support, WDIV reported.
Shock is not the first Michigan resident to have been caught living with a corpse, according to the Free Press.
In December 2017, investigators found a 49-year-old man had been living with his girlfriend's body for about a month.
In April 2018, a 62-year-old woman had been living with her boyfriend's badly decomposed body for several months.
In July 2018, investigators said a Detroit mother had been living with her dead daughter's body for eight months.
