Meteor spotted by hundreds across the Southeast

Hundreds of people across the Southeast United States reported seeing streaking light in the sky Thursday morning.

Just before 7 a.m., dozens of people in the Charlotte area contacted WSOC to alert the station that they had seen what appeared to be a meteor light up the sky.

According to the American Meteorological Society, the fireball, which is a type of meteor, was spotted in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky.

The organization posted several user-submitted videos of the sightings on YouTube. According to the nonprofit organization, there have been more than 375 reports about the slow and bright fireball.

This is the second large meteor sighting over the East Coast this week, with one reported on Sunday in Florida.

According to Popular Science, around 60 tons of space dust -- coming from meteors, comets and the like -- falls to Earth every day, but it's generally incredibly small.
