Although the appointment is new, McConaughey has co-taught at the school since 2015, Austin360 reported. He graduated with a degree in film studies from UT Austin in 1993.
The 49-year-old Texas native began co-teaching the Script to Screen film production class with faculty member and director Scott Rice and developed the curriculum, according to a UT news release.
"It's the class I wish I would have had when I was in film school. Working in the classroom with these students gives me a chance to prepare them," McConaughey said in a statement. "Making movies, turning words on paper into film, is both a science and art -- no matter the time or generation. The elements of truth and genuine joy for the process are timeless. That will always be our classroom focus."
Students enrolled in the class for the fall semester will study McConaughey's 2020 film, "The Gentlemen," which is in post-production, and his 2012 film, "Mud."
