Witness told KHON that the man was swimming Saturday morning about 60 yards offshore when the attack occurred.
Emergency services responded to the attack around 9 a.m. with a helicopter and jet ski to help the victim. He was unresponsive and later died at the scene.
Warning signs have been erected a half-mile on either side of the beach and will remain in place until Sunday according to The Maui News, a Hawaii-based, daily newspaper.
