A police officer noticed debris that looked out of place on the driveway of Judith Krystyniak's home around 7:30 a.m. Monday, knocked on the door and no one opened it, WGN reported.

The officer returned around noon with a social worker. This time David Krystyniak, 47, walked outside the home and talked with them. The officer asked to see his mother and was invited into the home, WLS reported.

The officer and social worker searched the house for her. The social worker found Judith Krystyniak’s body after she saw a hand sticking out from a large garbage can.

Investigators believe David Krystyniak's put his mother's body in the trash and planned to put the can at the curb for pickup Monday, WGN reported.

David Krystyniak was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He is being held without bond.

A motive is unclear, however, authorities said David Krystyniak suffers from mental illness.

Earlier in July, he called police and erroneously reported that his mother had overdosed. At the time, she told responding officers that her son was figuring out the right balance of new medication.
