John Legend takes home Emmy, becomes first African-American man to earn EGOT

John Legend has made entertainment awards history. He became the latest to win the coveted EGOT, taking home an Emmy Award at Sunday night’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony. He portrayed Jesus Christ in NBC’s live staging of “Jesus Christ Superstar, Live in Concert.”

He won the Emmy as executive producer for the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice broadcast of the 1970 musical, Variety reported.

Legend is the first African American man to take home an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards. He's also tied Robert Lopez as the youngest winner at the age of 39, according to Variety.

Legend, along with Lloyd Webber and Rice, are only the 13th, 14th and 15th winners of the EGOT.

The singer already had 10 Grammy awards, an Oscar for 2015's original song "Glory" from the movie "Selma" and a Tony for co-producing the revival of the play "Jitney," USA Today reported.

Others who have taken home the EGOTs include Lopez, who has done it twice, Mel Brooks, Rita Moreno and Whoopi Goldberg, USA Today reported.

"Jesus Christ Superstar, Live in Concert" beat the Grammys, the Oscars, the Golden Globes and the "Night of Too Many Stars" a benefit show on HBO, USA Today reported.

Legend is up for the limited series/TV movie lead actor category in the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards broadcast on Sept. 17.
