A Houston man is accused of fatally shooting his fiancee days after proposing to her, authorities said.

Update 8:30 a.m. EST Jan. 5: Harris County deputies said Kendrick Atkins was arrested and charged following the fatal shooting of his fiancée, Dominic Jefferson, KTRK reported.

Atkins turned himself in late Saturday morning and was arrested after questioning, the television station reported.

"Nobody deserves to die like that," Jefferson's sister, Charmone Onyeije, told KHOU. "I'm not going to let her die in vain, but I am going to celebrate her life as we know it."

Jefferson’s family said Atkins had proposed to her on New Year’s Eve. They said Jefferson had three children and ran a business to help African-American women succeed in the arts, the television station reported.

Originial report: According to deputies, witnesses said the man shot his fiancee in the parking lot after an argument, KTRK reported.

When a man in the parking lot rushed to help the woman, the gunman allegedly began firing at him, the television station reported.

"We need answers. Why did it come to this? How did it come to this? She has kids," the victim's sister told KTRK.

An investigation is ongoing, police said.
