Officials said the man's family members contacted police in August and expressed concern about him after he threatened to shoot anyone who came to his home.
"The family members knew he had firearms in the house and were very concerned that he might harm himself or others," police wrote in a blotter post.
An officer with the department's Crisis Response Unit then petitioned the King County Superior Court for an extreme risk protection order.
According to the Seattle Police Department, extreme risk protection orders “prevent individuals at high risk of harming themselves or others from accessing firearms by allowing family, household members, and police to obtain a court order when there is demonstrated evidence that the person poses a significant danger.” Police said the order was granted and served the week.
The man voluntarily turned over 18 firearms, which have since been taken into evidence for safekeeping, police said.
