A man in a late-model, black Chevrolet sedan asked the girl around 7 a.m. to "get in the car," WXYZ reported. She asked him what the password is and ran when he did not know.
"I just froze for a second and then in my mind I said, 'Run, run, run,'" the 12-year-old told WXYZ. "In my mind, I said 'You don't want to get in the car because something bad is going to happen and you're never going to see your family again.'"
She ran and returned to the bus stop after the man, described as white with dark hair and in his early 20s, had left. The girl told a school resource officer about what happened when she got to school, WXYZ reported.
"I actually got a call from school and it was very frightening," the girl's mother told WXYZ.
The family developed the password for safety and recommends the strategy.
"Stay safe and put a password with your family and don't ever talk to strangers or ever get in their cars," the 12-year-old girl told WXYZ.
