According to WTNH-TV, emergency crews responded at 10 a.m. Friday to a report of a fire in the lot for Sandy Point Beach, West Haven police said. First responders put out the blaze and found the body of a small dog, the station reported.

Police believe that someone set the dog – likely a miniature Schnauzer – on fire, then left the area, according to WTNH. The culprit may have poured an accelerant while starting the blaze, investigators said.

So far, authorities have not named or released descriptions of any suspects, WFSB-TV reported.

If you witnessed any unusual behavior near the lot from 10 p.m. July 4 to 1 a.m. July 5, call West Haven police at 203-937-3900.
