More than 35 people, from emergency responders to bystanders, worked for five hours to rescue the couple, both 72 years old, the San Miguel County Sheriff's Office said.
"It's believed the incident occurred some time before the wife was able to call to 911," the Sheriff's Office said.
The couple, who were not identified, were taken to a hospital, the Sheriff's Office said.
