Carrie Jernigan, of Alma, told KFSM-TV she was recently taking advantage of a Payless close-out sale when her daughter pointed out a pair of "Avengers" shoes.
"She has the biggest heart, and she said, 'There is a boy in my class that loves 'Avengers,' and his shoes are too small, could you buy him these?,' and I was like, 'Of course,'" Jernigan said.
As she was checking out, Jernigan jokingly asked the clerk how much it would cost to buy the rest of the store's inventory.
But Jernigan's joke turned serious. She left her phone number with the clerk and later received a call from the district manager.
"The next thing you know, we are trying to figure out how to get almost 1,500 shoes home with us that day," Jernigan said.
In all, Jernigan took home almost $21,000 worth of merchandise, Money.com reported. She plans to give the shoes to local adults and children in need, and has also decided to hold a school supply drive.
Jernigan told KFSM-TV she hopes her children continue to give back.
"I always tell my kids, if you ask them what they want to be when they grow up, they say, 'Be kind,' and so I don't care what they do in life as long as they are kind and good people," she said.
