According to the Limestone County Sheriff's Office, Elizabeth Anne Case, 36, of East Limestone Road in Toney, decided to go "dumpster diving" Friday night. Deputies said she put her baby in an unsecured car seat, drove to sites in Madison and Limestone counties, then headed back home to go to sleep, the News Courier reported.
But when Case arrived at her residence about 5:40 a.m., she left the child inside the car, officials told AL.com. Deputies said he wasn't discovered until hours later, after the boy's grandmother pounded on the door and woke up Case to look for the child about 1:30 p.m.
Case initially tried to revive the baby in the shower as his grandmother called police, the News Courier reported. Authorities then met the women and baby at a nearby recreation center, according to the newspaper. Emergency crews took the boy to an Athens hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead, the Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies arrested Case, who recently posted bail on a first-degree robbery charge and "is a known drug user," the News Courier reported. She remains jailed without bond, deputies said.
