Around 70 wild horses and burros will be offered for adoption in an event March 13-14 at the The Champions Expo Center at 4122 Laybourne Road in Springfield.

These animals are being offered by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management, which uses the adoption program as a way to manage the size of wild horse and burro herds.

The horses and burros are available on a first-come, first-serve basis to qualified adopters.

The adoption event begins March 13 at 8 a.m., although adoptions and sales will begin at 9 a.m., and run until 5 p.m. The next day the event will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

To adopt one of the horses or burros, you must be at least 18 years old, and meet a few other requirements like providing adequate facilities to house the animal, have no animal cruelty convictions and provide a stock or horse trailer. There is also a $25 adoption fee.

The BLM also offers an adoption incentive program, which offers up to $1,000 for adopting an eligible horse or burro.

More information on the adoption process and animal care is available on the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Program website.
