Police investigate incident involving possible gunfire at Urbana University

Police responded to Urbana University this afternoon for an incident possibly involving gunfire on the campus.

Urbana Police Chief Matt Lingrell said a weapon may have been shown during a fight on the campus, however, officers are still investigating the incident.

The report was made just after 2 p.m.

“(There) may have been a shot or shots fired, but no active incident currently,” Lingrell said.

Urbana University sent an emergency alert to students, which said “there is a suspect with a weapon on campus. Shots have been fired.” The campus was advised to “shelter in place,” according to the alert.

At least four police cruisers were in the area of Sycamore Hall, which is a student housing area of the campus.

Officers were going in and out of Sycamore Hall and had crime scene tape up in the area.

The university issued a statement after an all-clear notification was sent to the university community about 20 minutes after the incident was reported.

“Urbana University takes care and caution when it comes to the safety of the student community,” the university said in a prepared statement.

Additional details surrounding the incident were not immediately released.
