Teenager drowns in Glen Helen despite officer’s attempt at rescue

An 18-year-old man died in an apparent drowning at The Cascades in the closed Glen Helen nature preserve in Yellow Springs on Sunday afternoon, according to the Miami Twp. Fire-Rescue Department.

A 911 call reported a potential drowning around 2 p.m. As Miami Twp. emergency personnel responded, a Yellow Springs police officer arrived and found the teen in the water under a log, according a Miami Twp. Facebook post.

The officer jumped into the water, pulled the teen to shore and started CPR.

Shortly after, Miami Twp. personnel arrived and worked with police and bystanders to bring the teen up a steep incline to the trail. After resuscitation efforts continued, the teen was pronounced dead at the scene, Miami Twp. reported.

The teen, who has not yet been identified, was in the water at The Cascades, the site of a scenic waterfall that serves as a centerpiece to Glen Helen.

Miami Twp. and Yellow Springs Police officials reminded the public that Glen Helen is currently closed to the public and will remain so for the foreseeable future.
