Springfield crews search Buck Creek for possible victim

Springfield and Enon Mad River Twp. fire crews searched Buck Creek early Sunday for a possible drowning victim, but rescuers now say there may not have been anyone in danger at all.

Springfield police and fire were called around 10:45 p.m. Saturday to the waterway off Cliff Park Drive after people said a man went in the water and never resurfaced.

"Witnesses said they watched a male down the banks of Buck Creek jump in and never come back up," said Springfield fire Capt. Brian Wirth on Saturday night.

The city asked for township crews with boats to join search efforts, which were underway through about 3 a.m. Sunday.

Rescuers planned to resume search efforts during daylight hours, but investigators learned that no one actually saw the man go in the water. Witnesses saw the man along the banks behind some trees and then heard a splash. They became concerned after not seeing the man again.

Crews said they will not resume a search until they have better information.
