During a visit to the region on Sunday night, President Donald Trump said he is working with lawmakers on “trying to come up with a solution” to gun violence in the wake of last month’s mass shooting in Dayton’s Oregon District.

In an exclusive interview with the president, News Center 7’s Molly Koweek asked President Trump what a solution might look like.

“We have to protect our second amendment,” Trump said. “We can’t let guns be taken away from good people, but we want to have them taken away from crazy people.”

Koweek spoke to the president after he finished remarks at Pratt Industries in Wapakoneta Sunday night.

President Trump blamed congressional Democrats for the stalemate on gun legislation.

“We’re dealing right now with Democrats who frankly I wish were being a little more dedicated to getting something done,” Trump said.

Just a few days ago Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to have a vote on a House-backed bill that would expand background checks.

McConnell said he would only bring a bill to the floor if the president is willing to sign it.

During the interview with Newscenter 7, President Trump would not specifically say what if any current plans he would support.

“We have a lot of good ideas,” Trump said.

President Trump’s last visit to Ohio was on Aug. 7, just days after the mass shooting in the Oregon District killed nine and injured 27.

The president and first lady Melania Trump met with the injured and first responders during that visit.

At the end of Sunday’s interview, Koweek asked President Trump why voters should support him again in 2020.

“I think Ohio’s had its best year,” Trump said. “Ohio is a very important state to me.”

President Trump won Ohio in 2016 defeating Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, 51.7% to 43.6%.
