Officials: Property values may be ready at the end of October

SPRINGFIELD — Clark County property values produced by a local real estate equalization project are scheduled to be available for review at the end of the month, officials confirmed Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Auditor George Sodders announced in August that his office would review property values a year ahead of the 2010 triennial update in the wake of a local “softening housing market.”

The project is intended to make all the property values fair in light of the fluctuating market.

Sodders and John Ebert of Michigan-based CAMA Resources and Technology LLC (CRT) enlisted the help of Wittenberg University economics professor Jeff Ankrom for the project.

Ebert said Wednesday that the project is progressing and officials are considering data from Jan. 1, 2007 to Jan. 1, 2009.

“We’ve been digesting the real estate market information and the property data in a lot of ways,” Ebert said.

However, “this is not a reappraisal and we’re not redoing every property,” he added.

Inconsistencies in the county’s last property revaluation in 2007 resulted in a record-breaking 2,836 appeals of the property values that showed up on 2008 tax bills.

Officials have set aside Oct. 26 - Nov. 6 as the “open book” period for property owners and taxing districts to review and value changes set in motion by the study, Ebert said.

“We want a chance for everyone to reflect and participate in October and November, rather than waiting until the tax bills” are mailed in 2010, Ebert said.

Director of Appraisal Nikki Crawford said the values will be submitted to the state Nov. 16.
