Mechanicsburg library hopes for May levy

Mechanicsburg Public Library officials are hoping to seek a new operating levy this spring.

In December, the library’s board voted unanimously to seek a levy, which would help provide funding to keep the library’s operating hours, staffing, programs and services at its current levels.

Shirley Keiser, library board president, said the board is now waiting for certification from the Champaign County Auditor’s Office. Once the resolution is certified, Keiser said the library will finalize the details of the levy, and will present it to the district’s school board for final approval. The levy has to be presented to the school board because the library is under the taxing authority of the school district, Keiser said.

Initially, she said board members were hoping to have the levy approved in January. However, Keiser said because of the school board’s meeting schedule, final approval for the levy will likely not take place until early February. The resolution to place the levy on the ballot must be approved and filed by Feb. 18 for the issue to be on the May ballot, she said.

Previously, board members noted the levy would be necessary because of state cutbacks that left the library with an operating deficit of almost $40,000, despite previous reductions in staffing, services and hours of operation.
