Mayberry in Mechanicsburg to honor area police officers

A tribute to honor Champaign County police officers and veterans is set for tonight at Mechanicsburg school.

Mayberry in Mechanicsburg will feature Don Knotts’ daughter, Karen Knotts. Don Knotts played Deputy Barney Fife on “The Andy Griffth Show.”

Also a Don Knotts impressionist will perform for the crowd. The event starts at 6 p.m. Saturday.

“I thought we could do something locally to raise money for the police department and bring a fun night to the area,” show promoter Stan Oliver said.

The impressionist, David Browning, is a comedian and so is Karen Knotts. The two have worked together previously to support law enforcement around the county.

The money raised will help fund a new K9 unit at the Mechanicsburg Police Department. Oliver said the police department is trying to have a K9 unit with no cost to taxpayers.

The show will also include a demonstration of what a K-9 unit can do to help police do their job safely.

Oliver said the night will honor law enforcement and first responders, along with veterans. There will be live music played at the event with songs from “The Andy Griffth Show.”

“The local boy scouts will be there and a local chapter of the VFW,” Oliver said.

The event will cost an adult a $10 donation and a child $5. Public servants who dress in uniform will get free admission into the event.
