Mad River Twp. trustees to investigate fire department

In the wake of firing a former fire lieutenant accused of sexual misconduct at a previous job, Mad River Twp. trustees Tuesday night announced they are investigating the fire department as a whole.

Trustees spent more than an hour in executive session during a special meeting, and said they will hire an investigator.

In the last week, three employees filed new complaints with trustees over concerns about department leadership.

Trustees fired Lt. Steve Schaefer in the last two weeks, after this news organization started filing public records requests. Since then, we’ve been looking into how Schaefer was hired in Mad River Twp., and whether leaders ignored warnings.

Mad River Twp. trustees have called a special meeting Tuesday to discuss possible discipline of public employees.

“The purpose of the Mad River Township special meeting to be held at 6:30 p.m. at Enon firehouse is an executive session for the purpose of considering the discipline of public employees and the investigation of complaints against public employees and any action necessary thereafter,” according to a release.

Mad River Twp. Trustees President Bob McClure declined to comment on specifics about the planned executive meeting when reached.
