Locals cheer Murphy’s medal-winning run in Rio

Hundreds of Clayton Murphy fans and followers cheered wildly Monday night as they watched their man from this Darke County village take bronze in the 400-meter dash at the Summer Olympics in Rio.

The people of New Madison, nervous for the 2013 Tri-Village High School graduate, packed the high school cafeteria to watch Murphy on big screen TVs.

“You could just tell when Clayton, as he was growing, that he had a little bit something different than most kids did,” Scott Warren, Murphy’s high school track and cross country coach, told News Center 7’s Natalie Jovonovich. “He was just a determined young man.”

The coach has kept in touch with Murphy’s parents, who are in Brazil with the newest medal winner for Team USA.
