***UPDATE (Oct. 30, 2019)***

The franchise owner behind the new Tropical Smoothie Cafe coming to Troy snagged one of the restaurant chain's "Franchisee of the Year" awards earlier this year — but his new Troy store will disqualify him from winning the award again.

Tim Poulos was named “Single-Unit Franchisee of the Year” in March for his performance overseeing the Tropical Smoothie restaurant at 233 E. Home Road in Springfield. His second franchise location is coming to 2309 W. Main St. in Troy. It will be the sixth Tropical Smoothie Cafe in the  Dayton area, although the others are under separate franchise ownership.

Charles Watson, CEO of Tropical Smoothie Cafe, said in a release that Poulos and other honorees who earned similar awards “represent some of our top-performing franchisees,” and he said franchisees “continue to play a crucial role in leading our company in growth, innovation, product development and hospitality to achieve much-deserved success.”

Poulos told this news outlet via email that Troy “is a very vibrant and growing community. I chose this location in Troy because of the high amount of businesses and retailers within close proximity.”

The new Troy cafe will seat 50 and will employ 35 to 40,  Poulos said. If all goes well, it could open as early as mid-December.

The cafe’s menu will include wraps, sandwiches, flatbreads, and quesadillas in addition to the chain’s signature smoothies.

Poulos called Tropical Smoothie Cafe “a healthy alternative. We have smoothies made with real fruit and vegetables.”

The new Troy cafe also will offer catering.

***ORIGINAL STORY (Oct. 16, 2019)***

A new Tropical Smoothie Cafe location appears to be in the works in Troy, which would become the Dayton area's sixth location for the fast-growing restaurant and smoothie chain.

Miami County records suggest that a new Tropical Smoothie location is headed for 2309 W. Main St., where the owners have applied for a commercial building permit valued at an estimated $250,000 to build out a 12,750-square-foot space for a Tropical Smoothie Cafe.

Not every application for a commercial building permit results in a new business opening, since there are multiple regulatory and financial obstacles that retail business owners must successfully navigate before opening their doors to the public.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe operates five locations in the Dayton area and one in Springfield.

So far in 2019, Tropical Smoothie Cafe has opened 90 cafes and awarded 179 franchise agreements to expand its footprint across the country. Last week, in a release, Tropical Smoothie Cafe officials said they expect to sign 200 franchise agreements, open 130 cafes, and grow same-store sales by 5% in 2019.
