Habitat store relocates, new Urbana home construction project to start

The Habitat for Humanity for Champaign County ReStore has moved to a new location and will hold a grand reopening in April.

Late last month the non-profit organization closed it U.S. 36 location, where it had been for six years, and moved to its new home at 955 N. Main St. in Urbana.

The ReStore sells housewares, hardware, doors, windows, appliances and crafts. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“Some people that are restoring homes bring whatever they’re tearing out to us and then some people that are restoring homes come in to shop and buy those things,” said Anita Segreti, ReStore manager at the Champaign County Habitat for Humanity.

Profits from the store go directly to Habitat for Humanity to help build homes for those in need.

Officials hope the new location increases the number of shoppers at the store, which is located along U.S. 68.

“There’s a great deal of north-south traffic there. A lot of it is commuter traffic, which is what prompted us to change our hours … so that we could be open for those folks coming home so that they can come in and take a look,” Segreti said.

The non-profit organization will begin working on its eighth house on Harmon Avenue in Urbana, she said, but haven’t selected a family for the home.

Habitat typically receives about 30 to 40 applications for the homes, Segreti said, and is still accepting applications for the Harmon Avenue house.

The group has planned a Women’s Build in May or early June to build the home.

Women Build is Habitat for Humanity’s program for women who want to learn construction skills and build homes and communities. The program brings women together to address the housing crisis facing millions of women and children worldwide, according to the Habitat for Humanity website.

Last year Segreti said about 100 women participated in the construction project.

Lowe’s stores in Springfield and Troy have helped the organization with materials for the projects, she said.
