Mom, 2 children escape fire that destroys their home in West Carrollton

UPDATE @ 6:55 p.m.: A mother and two young children escaped the fire that destroyed their home, West Carrollton Fire Capt. Andy Shepherd said.

The resident told firefighters home smoke detectors alerted her. She saw flames in the attached garage, got out of the home on Ridgecrest Drive with the children and called 9-1-1 from a neighbor’s residence, the captain said. Her husband was at work.

A family pet did perish, Capt. Shepherd said.

The house is a total loss, he said, and crews arrived to find the structure pretty well consumed by the flames. The fire began in the garage and worked its way up into the attic.

Shepherd said the cause is undetermined and the fire is under investigation.

He said it was too soon to estimate the dollar loss to the structure and property.

The Red Cross has been called to assist the family.
